Gabriele Wetzko (born August 28, 1954 in Leipzig ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

She had her first international start in 1967 at the European Junior Championships, where she won the 100 meter freestyle title. The following year she started at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , where she won the silver medal in the GDR's 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay . In individual competitions she was fourth over 200 meters freestyle and fifth over 400 meters freestyle.

In the summer of 1969 she was the first European to swim the 100 meter freestyle under a minute when she improved the European record of the Hungarian Judit Turoczy to 59.6 seconds in Budapest .

At the European Championships in Barcelona in 1970 , she won the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyle titles , each with a European record . She also won the 4 × 100 meter relay relay and the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay with a world record.

Two years later at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , she won silver again with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay and came fourth in the 100 meter freestyle.

Furthermore, she was able to set up several new European records with the GDR relays over 4 × 100 meters freestyle and 4 × 100 meters medley.

Resignation and further professional career

In 1973 she ended her swimming career and began studying medicine , later she studied economics and also completed this degree.
