Heidi Pechstein (born July 4, 1944 in Leipzig ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , she started for the all-German team and won the bronze medal with the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay. In 1962 she was able to win the title of 100 meters freestyle and the 4 x 100 meter relay at the European Championships in Leipzig . At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , she remained medalless. She was from 1959 to 1961 and then again in 1967 with the relay of the SC DHfK Leipzig GDR champion in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay. In 1961 and 1964 she won the GDR title over 100 meters freestyle; she also won titles in the 200 meters (1961 and 1967), 400 meters (1967) and 800 meters freestyle (1967).

In 1962, she and the layer relay ( Ingrid Schmidt , Barbara Göbel , Ute Noack and Heidi Pechstein) were elected Team of the Year in the GDR for Sportsman of the Year. In the same year she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
