Barbara Krause (born July 7, 1959 in East Berlin ) is a former German swimmer and multiple Olympic champion who competed for the GDR . Krause is a victim of state-prescribed doping in GDR competitive sports .

Career

She won her first title at the Swimming World Championships in Cali in 1975 with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay . In 1977 she was then over 100 m freestyle and with the two relays of the GDR three-time European champion. The following year, the World Championship in 1978, which was otherwise disappointing for the GDR, was followed by the world championship title in the 100 m freestyle. The conclusion and highlight of her career followed at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , when she became Olympic champion in the 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle and with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.

She was also able to improve the world record over 100 meters freestyle at the 1978 World Championships and at the 1980 Olympic Games three times and the world record over 200 meters freestyle in 1978 in Berlin once.

In 1988 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame . In addition, she received the Patriotic Order of Merit several times in the GDR .
