Simone Ashley Manuel (born August 2, 1996 in Sugar Land , Texas ) is an American swimmer who specializes in freestyle swimming over short distances. At the 2016 Summer Olympics , she won two gold medals (over 100 m freestyle - at the same time as Penny Oleksiak - and the 4 × 100 m individual medals) and two silver medals. She became the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal, swimming an Olympic and American record.

Manuel improved three world records as a member of a season. Since 2014 studies at Stanford University , where she swims for the Stanford Cardinals. With Stanford, she won the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Women's Team Championship in Swimming and Diving.

Life

She has two older brothers, one of whom plays basketball for Southern Methodist University . She graduated from Fort Bend Austin High School in 2014 and began studying at Stanford University .
