Hendrika Wilhelmina "Rie" Mastenbroek (born February 26, 1919 in Rotterdam ; † November 6, 2003 there ) was a Dutch swimmer and three-time Olympic champion .

biography

She was trained in her youth by the mother of Maria-Johanna Braun , who had become Olympic champion in 1928. In 1934 Mastenbroek won three gold medals and one silver medal at the European Championships in Magdeburg . At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin - she was only 17 years old at the time - she repeated this achievement. She won the 100 m freestyle , 400 m freestyle and the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay . Over 100 m back she won the silver medal behind her compatriot Nida Senff (Senff had not passed the last turn according to the regulations and had to swim back a few meters; nevertheless, she won thanks to an exceptionally good performance on the last lane).

From 1937 Mastenbroek worked as a swimming instructor. Because of this she lost her status as an amateur , which meant she was no longer eligible to compete. During her short career, she had set a total of nine world records, six in backstroke and three in free style. In 1968 she was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming , and in 1997 she received the Olympic Medal from the International Olympic Committee .
