Ina Kleber (born September 29, 1964 in Greiz ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .
Career
In the early 1980s, Kleber was one of the best back swimmers. She achieved her first great success at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow when she won the silver medal over 100 meters behind Rica Reinisch . A possible Olympic victory at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , however, prevented the GDR's Olympic boycott. Just two weeks after the 1984 Games ended, she confirmed her outstanding form with a new world record over 100 meters back, which lasted seven years before Hungarian Krisztina Egerszegi improved it in 1991.
She won the 100 meter back title at the European Championships in Split in 1981 and in Rome in 1983 .
At the 1982 World Championships in Guayaquil , she won the silver medal behind Kristin Otto on her favorite track . Ina Kleber was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1980 and in gold in 1984.
