Judy Grinham

Judith Brenda "Judy" Grinham (born March 5, 1939 in Hampstead ) is a former British swimmer .

At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne , 32 years after Lucy Morton, she became the second British swimmer to win Olympic gold on an individual route. On December 5, 1956, she won the 100 m back . At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 , she won gold on the back track and with the individual relay, and bronze with the freestyle relay. In the same year she became European champion over the 100 m back distance in Budapest. This made her the first female swimmer to be the title holder at the Olympic Games, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Judy Grinham retired from swimming on her 20th birthday. Shortly afterwards she married the journalist Peter Rowley . In 1981 she was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming . In 2007 she was awarded the Order of MBE .
