Natalie Coughlin (born August 23, 1982 in Vallejo , California ) is a former American swimmer .

Career

Coughlin originally comes from Concord . The psychology student from the University of California, Berkeley is considered one of the best back swimmers in the world. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , she won two gold medals: 100 m back and with the American 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. In addition to two other relay silver medals, she was also able to win the bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle and was one of the most successful American athletes with five medals in Athens.

At the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montréal , she became world champion with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. She also won the silver medal in the 100 m freestyle, but had to be satisfied with bronze behind Kirsty Coventry and Antje Buschschulte on her special 100 m back course as the reigning Olympic champion .

At the 2007 Swimming World Championships in Melbourne , she won a total of five medals; including the gold medals for the 100 m back and the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

Coughlin won her third Olympic gold medal again in the 100 m back competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She undercut her world record on February 18, 2008 and swam a new American record, but did not reach the time of Kirsty Coventry , who already set a new world record in the semifinals, but only won silver in the final. In addition, she was used in all three US relays and won two silver (4 x 100 m freestyle and 4 x 100 m individual medley) and bronze with the 4 x 200 m freestyle relay. She achieved two more bronze medals in the 100 m freestyle and 200 m medley.

Natalie Coughlin is married and their daughter was born in October 2018.
