Vallejo ( English : [vəˈleɪhoʊ] , Spanish : [baˈʎexo] ) is a city in Solano County in the US state of California , United States , on the northern edge of the Bay of San Pablo , with 121,299 inhabitants (as of 2016). The urban area has a size of 126.3 km². Vallejo has a must-see downtown area , bordered by Sacramento , Capitol Street, Sonoma Boulevard and Hudson Alley. The California Maritime Academy is located in the city .

In 1996 the US Navy closed its shipyard in Vallejo, which previously had 10,000 jobs. In 2004 the city was one of the places with the strongest job growth. New settlements attracted families from San Francisco who found it too expensive there. House prices doubled (as in many other places) within a few years (“ real estate bubble ”).

2008 Bankruptcy and Consequences

In May 2008 the city filed for bankruptcy (see also “ Subprime Crisis ”). Since then, a bankruptcy judge has been making sure that the city does not break completely due to the demands of its creditors, but also that the mayor and the city council bring the finances back into balance.

Potholes in the streets remain unrepaired, and weeds grow meters high in public parking lots. Four of the eight fire stations closed; the number of police officers was reduced from 160 to 95. Your emergency vehicles only move out when there is acute danger to life and limb.

In 2010 one of the three secondary schools was closed. An amusement park on the edge of Vallejo is the largest taxpayer, and hospitals are the largest employers. Most residents who still have work commute to San Francisco.

In recent years the city's population has increased again and the financial and social situation has slowly improved.
