Emily Jane Seebohm (born July 5, 1992 in Adelaide ) is an Australian swimmer . In 2015 she became world champion over 100 and 200 meters back, in 2017 over 200 meters back.

Career

When she was two years old, she moved to Brisbane , Queensland , where she started swimming at the age of five. At the Junior Pan Pacific Championships 2007 she won the titles over 100 m back and 4 × 100 m individual relay.

At the Swimming World Championships in Melbourne in 2007 , she was 14 years old and was already 4th over 100 m back and thus best Australian in this race. Then she was used together with Libby Lenton , Jessicah Schipper and Leisel Jones in the 4 × 100 m layer relay and won gold.

At the Australian qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Seebohm swam a new world record on this route over 50 m back in 27.95 seconds in the semifinals. During this time, she was the first woman to stay under 28 seconds on this route. But it didn't last longer than 24 hours and was improved in the final by Sophie Edington to 27.67 seconds. Seebohm did not take part in this final because the 50 m back is not an Olympic distance and she wanted to concentrate on the 100 m. At the Olympic Games she just missed the finals over 100 m back in ninth place, but ultimately won the gold medal with the 4 × 100 m individual relay.

In 2010 Seebohm was the most successful swimmer ever at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi with a total of seven medals. She won over 100 m back with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and with the 4 × 100 m individual relay relay. There was also the silver medal over 100 m freestyle and 200 m medley and the bronze medal over 50 m butterfly and 200 m back.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , Seebohm won over 100 meters back and with the 4 × 100 m relay. She also won the silver medal over 200 meters back. Since the semifinals of the 2017 Swimming World Championships in Budapest, she has held the Oceania record over 200 meters back with a time of 2: 05.81 minutes and won the bronze medal over 100 meters back in this competition.
