Regan Smith (born February 9, 2002 ) is an American swimmer . She currently holds the world record for the 100 m and 200 m backstroke on the long track. In addition, she was a member of the layer relay, which reached the record over 4 × 100 m.

Life

At the age of 12, she set several age group records and won several medals at the high school state meetings. After that success, she joined Apple Valley's Riptide Swim Club and was coached by Mike Parratto, the former coach of Jenny Thompson , the twelve-time Olympic medalist.

She became a member of the US junior team and set three national age group records for the 100-yard back, 100-yard butterfly, and 100-meter back in the 13-14 year old group.

Swimming World Championships 2019

At the 2019 World Swimming Championships in Gwangju , South Korea , she competed over 200 m back and prevailed in the preliminary and semi-finals. In the run-up, she broke her own junior world record with 2: 06.01 min. In the semifinals, she broke up with 2: 03.35 min the world record of Missy Franklin (2: 04,06 min) from the year 2012th

In the final she won the world championship title by a large margin. With 2: 03.69 min she again undercut Franklin's record, but remained behind her semi-final time.

Although she was not qualified over 100 m back, Smith swam the back distance of the 4 × 100 m individual relay. She won the gold medal together with Lilly King , Kelsi Dahlia and Simone Manuel and broke the previous world record (3: 51.55 min) of 2017 with 3: 50.40 minutes. On her route she beat the time of the World record holder Kathleen Baker (58.00 s).
