Lilly King (born February 10, 1997 in Evansville , Indiana ) is an American swimmer . At the 2016 Summer Olympics , she won the gold medal in the 100 m breaststroke and in the 4 × 100 m medley relay . She currently holds the world record for the 100 m and 50 m breaststroke on the long track.

Life

King was born to Mark and Ginny King. Mark graduated from Indiana State University with track and cross-country races, and Ginny swam for Eastern Kentucky University and Illinois State University . King's younger brother, Alex, was a walk-on swimmer at the University of Michigan . King attended FJ Reitz High School. Their swimming team shares the Lloyd Pool with five other teams. This resulted in the pool always being crowded with swimmers who were slower than King. That's why. To compensate for this, she took part in the training of the local championship team and joined the Newburgh Sea Creatures.

college

King went to Indiana University Bloomington and joined the Indiana Hoosiers swim team.

At the NCAA finals in 2016, she was NCAA champion in the 100 yard chest (56.85 s / 91.44 m) and 200 yard chest (2: 03.59 min / 183 m). They also set some national records. In the first year she was named a Big Ten swimmer and received four All America honors.

2016 Summer Olympics

At the US preparatory tournament for the Olympics in Omaha , King won the 100 m chest and 200 m chest and qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro .

In the 100 m breaststroke prelims , she took first place with a time of 1: 05.78 minutes. In the semifinals she swam again to first place with 1: 05.70 min. Second place went to the reigning world champion Julija Jefimowa from Russia. This was previously suspended for 16 months due to doping. King won the gold medal and set a new Olympic record with 1: 04.93 min.

Over 200 m breaststroke , she reached 15th place in the preliminary races with 2: 25.89 minutes and qualified for the semi-finals. There she took 7th place with 2: 24.59 minutes and was eliminated.

At the 2017 US Championships, which were also considered a qualifying competition for the World Swimming Championships in Budapest , King dominated the breaststroke competition. She won the competition in the 50 m chest with 29.66 seconds, the 100 m chest with 1: 04.95 min and the 200 m chest with 2: 21.83 min.

In the first competition in the 100 m chest she won with 1: 04.13 minutes, which was a new world record . King's teammate Katie Meili came second and Julija Jefimowa third. She also won gold with the 4x100 m tier relay and the 4x100 m mixed tier relay.

At the 2019 World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, she was able to defend the titles in the 50 m chest, 100 m chest and 4x100 m medley. She won silver in the mixed-tier relay.

Honors

On September 11, 2018, the city of Evansville decided to name the competition pool, which replaces the Lloyd pool, in the Deaconess Aquatic Center after Kings. This was also personally committed to the project.
