Medal table

Ute Geweniger (born February 24, 1964 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German swimming athlete who - starting for the GDR - was among the world's best from 1980 to 1983. She won a total of 16 medals at the Olympic Games , World and European Championships, including 13 gold medals under the influence of doping substances .

Career

She was most successful on the 100-meter chest course : Here she broke the world record six times, and she won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . A second victory in these games was achieved with the GDR's 4 × 100-meter tier relay.

At the European Championships in Split in 1981 , she won five times - over 100 meters chest (world record: 1: 08.60 min.) And 200 meters chest, 100 meters butterfly, 200 meter medley and with the 4 × 100 meter medley relay of the GDR. In the same year she was named GDR Sportswoman of the Year and the World Sportswear Journalists Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive (AIPS) named World Sportswoman of the Year.

More Achievements

  • 1981 world record over 200 meters medley: 2: 11.73 minutes (July 4th 1981 in Berlin; the world record was only improved in 1992 by the Chinese Li Lin )
  • 1982 World Championships: Winner over 100 m breaststroke and with the 4 × 100 meter individual relay (with Kristin Otto , Ines Geißler and Birgit Meineke ); Second over 200 m chest and 200 m medley

Ute Geweniger started for SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and trained with Joachim Rother . After the dissolution of the GDR, she opened a beauty salon in her hometown of Chemnitz .

GDR doping

In 2005, Geweniger confirmed that their successes and records were achieved with the help of illegal doping , which was systematically administered under state supervision . Unlike, for example, the 400-meter medley Olympic champion, world and European champion Petra Schneider , who also admits her doping offense, she is against setting records from this time, which are still current, as they are associated with a lot of hard work. Her award as " World Swimmer of the Year " by the US magazine "Swimming World" has rarely been revoked.
