Ágnes Kovács [ ˈaːɡnɛʃ ˈkovaːtʃ ] (born July 13, 1981 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian swimmer .

Career

She is one of the most successful breast swimmers ever. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 she was Olympic champion over 200 m breaststroke. Four years earlier she had won the bronze medal over the same distance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . She was also successful at European and World Championships. For example, she was European champion at the 1999 European Championships over all three breast-length courses, and at the 1998 and 2001 World Championships she won the title over her special course.

In 1997 and 1998 she was voted Europe's swimmer of the year .
