Svetlana Anatoljewna Warganowa ( Russian Светлана Анатольевна Варганова ; born November 19, 1964 in Leningrad ) is a former Russian swimmer who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s .

Athletic career

Svetlana Warganowa won the silver medal over 200 m breast behind her compatriot Lina Kačiušytė at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . At the World Swimming Championships in Guayaquil in 1982 , she won the gold medal over 200 m breaststroke and the bronze medal with the Soviet relay (4 × 100 m individual medley). On March 30, 1979, Varganova set a world record for the 200 m chest in Minsk . Her time was 02: 31.09 (also a European record ). In 1982 she was the Soviet champion (100 m).

After the end of her sporting career, Varganova worked as a trainer.
