Leisel Marie Jones [ ˈliːsəl ] (born August 30, 1985 in Katherine , Northern Territory , Australia ) is an Australian swimmer.

Career

At the age of 15, Leisel Jones was already a member of the Australian national swimming team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . At the 2003 World Swimming Championships , she swam a new world record in the 100 m chest. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , she won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m individual relay relay. Jones also won silver in the 200m chest and bronze in the 100m chest.

At the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montréal , she became world champion over 100 m breaststroke, but lost her world record in the semifinals to the young American Jessica Hardy . In the final over 200 m breaststroke, however, she swam a new world record and won ahead of Anne Poleska and Mirna Jukić . She won another title with the Australian layer relay.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne , she was the first female athlete to win all the distances in the breaststroke. Only Petria Thomas had succeeded in such a hat trick at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester in the butterfly swimming position, when the 50 m distance was completed there for the first time. Over 50 m - a distance that she had only aimed for a short time - she even defeated the reigning world record holder and world champion Jade Edmistone . Thereupon she won the 200 m, to finally regain the record over 100 m in the world record time of 1: 05.09 min. She won a fourth gold medal in the 4 × 100 m individual relay alongside Sophie Edington , Jessicah Schipper and Lisbeth Lenton .

At the Swimming World Championships in Melbourne in 2007 , Leisel Jones defended her world title in the 100 m and 200 m chest, plus a gold medal with the Australian 4 × 100 m individual relay in a world record time and a silver medal in the 50 m chest.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Jones won the gold medal over 100 m breaststroke with a new Olympic record ahead of the American Rebecca Soni and the Austrian Mirna Jukić . In the 200 m breaststroke, she won the silver medal behind Soni. On the last day of the swimming competitions, she won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m individual relay.

In 2010 Jones swam at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi over 100 m chest, 200 m chest and with the 4 × 100 m individual relay to first place, over 50 m chest to second place.

In 2015 she took part in the Australian edition of the reality show I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! part.
