Kathleen Nord (born December 26, 1965 in Magdeburg ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

She started as a swimmer for SC Magdeburg . Her strengths were the distances of 200 m and 400 m positions as well as 200 m butterfly . At the beginning of her career she was successful in the intermediate distances and became European champion in 1983 and 1985 and world champion in this swimming style in 1986. After some sporting disappointments, she switched to the butterfly style and was able to become European champion again in 1987 and 1989. She achieved her greatest success at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul with the Olympic victory in the 200 m butterfly. She ended her career in 1990.

After reunification , she emigrated to the USA and became a trainer at the Florida Gold Coast swimming club in Palm Beach . She also completed a few small meetings on the short course between 1995 and 1996 with moderate success.

In 1986 and 1988 Kathleen Nord was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold.

Doping in the GDR

She received doping substances from her trainer Wolfgang Sack as part of the state compulsory doping in the GDR .
