Rosemarie Gabriel , previously Rosemarie Kother (born February 27, 1956 in Schwerin ), is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

The butterfly specialist was able to achieve numerous successes in this situation between 1973 and 1976. In 1974 she became European champion over 100 meters and 200 meters butterfly and was able to become world champion over 200 meters butterfly in 1973 and 1975. Only at the Olympic Games was she denied a great triumph and in 1976 in Montreal she “only” won bronze over the 200 meter butterfly behind her compatriots Andrea Pollack and Ulrike Tauber .

She already took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , where she finished fourth in her favorite discipline, the 200 meter butterfly.

During her career she was able to improve the world record in the 200 meter butterfly five times. In 1986 she was inducted into the international swimming sport hall of fame . In 1974 and 1976 she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Resignation and further professional career

Gabriel resigned from top-level sport in 1976 and devoted himself increasingly to physiotherapy . After completing her training, she looked after athletes from various sports in the Berlin Sports Club from 1980 to 1990. After reunification , she opened a practice in Berlin, which she has been running with her daughter Linda since 2006.
