Roxana Mărăcineanu (born May 7, 1975 in Bucharest ) is a French swimmer and politician. She has been the French sports minister since 2018.

life and career

Mărăcineanu comes from Romania , her family emigrated to France in 1984. She became a French citizen at the age of 16. She spent her youth in Mulhouse , where she began her swimming career with the Mulhouse Olympic Natation club . Mărăcineanu's strongest route was the 200 meter back , on which she became the first French world champion in 1998 (in Perth) and European champion in 1999 (in Istanbul). She also won the silver medal over 200m back at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . In 2004 she ended her active career.

Mărăcineanu then studied at the ESCP Europe business school , which she graduated in 2005. From 2007 Mărăcineanu appeared as a sports commentator on television. She reported for the public channels of France Télévisions by the FINA World Championships in 2007 and 2009 , the European Swimming Championships in 2010 and 2014 and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and 2012 in London.

Mărăcineanu began her political career in 2010 when she was elected to the Île de France Regional Council on the Parti socialiste (PS) list. She was a member of this until 2015. Prime Minister Édouard Philippe appointed Mărăcineanu in June 2018 - after several children drowned - as special envoy for improving swimming education in primary schools. In September 2018, President Emmanuel Macron appointed her as the successor to Laura Flessel-Colovic as Minister of Sport in the Philippe II cabinet . In the Castex cabinet , which has been in office since July 2020, the independent sports ministry has been abolished. Since then, Mărăcineanu has been Assistant Minister for Sport in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (under Jean-Michel Blanquer ).

Roxana Mărăcineanu is married to the journalist Franck Ballanger. The couple has three children.
