Laura Élodie Flessel-Colovic (born November 6, 1971 in Pointe-à-Pitre as Laura Flessel ) is a former French fencer ( sword ) and politician (non-party) from the overseas department of Guadeloupe . At the Olympic Games , she won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Career

Laura Flessel grew up in a middle class family in Guadelupe; her father was a meteorologist, her mother a teacher.

Athletic career

Laura Flessel started fencing in Guadeloupe. At 18, she came to the French sports center Institut national du sport et de l'éducation physique (INSEP) in Paris. In 1993 she was the first French champion with the epee team, in 1995 the first important international result followed with winning the silver medal at the World Fencing Championships in The Hague . She achieved her greatest success at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , where she won gold twice in the first epee competition for women. She won both in the individual and together with Valérie Barlois and Sophie Moressée-Pichot in the team competition. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney she won bronze, at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens she won silver in singles and bronze with the team.

At the 1998 World Fencing Championships in La Chaux-de-Fonds , she won the first two of five world championship titles. She won a total of twelve World Cup medals. Also in 1998 she won the European Fencing Cup for clubs with her club Racing Club de France .

In 1996 she married the sports journalist Denis Colovic. Their daughter Leilou was born in June 2001, and four months later Flessel-Colovic won the silver medal at the World Championships in Nîmes . In 2002 she tested positive for the doping agent Coramin . The World Fencing Federation assumed that Flessel had been given the drug by the trainer without her knowledge, and she was only banned for three months.

Laura Flessel-Colovic remained a successful athlete afterwards. In 2007 she was again world champion with the epee team at the World Cup in Saint Petersburg . She was appointed the flag bearer of the French delegation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . After the games, she ended her career.

On May 17, 2017, she was appointed Minister of Sport in the government of Prime Minister Édouard Philippe . On September 4, 2018, Flessel-Colovic surprisingly announced her resignation "for personal reasons". and Roxana Maracineanu has been nominated to succeed her. Mediapart and Le Canard enchaîné reported that Flessels' image rights marketing company did not declare income.
