Heligoland Edinburgh Regatta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Helgoland-Edinburgh regatta over 420 nautical miles with the destination Granton off the Scottish capital Edinburgh takes place every two years alternating with the Pantaenius Rund Skagen Race following the North Sea Week . The starting day is traditionally Whit Monday .

This long-distance regatta over the open North Sea was started for the first time on Whit Monday 1968 . Meinhard Kohfahl from Cuxhaven , who initiated the race, is considered her spiritual father . In the first race in 1968 only five yachts were at the start. His son Jens Kohfahl was at times race director of the 420 nautical mile regatta, in which more than 30 crews have participated in each of the last years. Depending on the weather, the yachts need two to five days to reach the Scottish port of Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Regatta was recognized as a qualifying regatta for the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race .
