The North Sea Week is a regatta week for deep-sea sailors, which has been held on the North Sea at Whitsun since 1922 and around the island of Helgoland since 1925 .

history

A group of sailors from the North German Regatta Club (NRV), together with members of friendly sailing clubs on the North Sea coast, decided to run a North Sea Week regatta series with the aim of Heligoland.

Since then there have been three feeder regattas to Helgoland from Bremerhaven , from Wilhelmshaven and from Cuxhaven . A feeder regatta from Hallig Hooge has been added for several years. For Hamburg sailors there is also an upstream regatta, the "Haspa Private Banking Cup" on the Elbe, from Wedel to Cuxhaven, which has been held since 1910. The North Sea Week is organized by the Regattagemeinschaft Nordseewoche eV , consisting of a total of nine sailing clubs. The organizers and helpers work on a voluntary basis.

The North Sea Week has always been aimed at professional sailors and amateurs alike. In addition to the yachts calculated according to measurement formulas such as ORC International or ORC Club, a parallel evaluation according to the IRC system has been offered for some time. The Family Cruiser Cup is advertised for families and inexperienced regatta sailors: Here crews can try out whether they enjoy regatta sport. However, neither spinnaker nor gennaker sails may be used in the Family Cruiser Cup.

In addition to the feeder races from Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Hallig Hooge, the so-called "Sundowner" regatta, which is the opening race of the so-called "SE Vibe Out Series", has been bringing sailors to Helgoland since 2003. The "SE Vibe Out Series" consists of three regattas: Sundowner, Hummer 1 and Hummer 2. This regatta series was created especially for ambitious amateurs and professionals. Mostly fast and large yachts that are built primarily for regatta use take part in the series. The core of the North Sea Week are the races BHF-BANK Cup Rund Helgoland and "INDUCON Cup Helgoländer Eight".

The number of participants has risen continuously in recent years. In 2010, the North Sea Week was most recently the host of the offshore part of the International German Championship in Sea Sailing. About 198 yachts with about 1,800 sailors took part in this North Sea week. For several years now, the number of registrations has been increasing again and the event is getting bigger from year to year. Also in 2012, the North Sea Week is organizing the deep sea part of the International German Championship in sea sailing.

The North Sea Week is also famous among sailors for its part of the event on land. Due to the seclusion of Heligoland, the sailors do not disperse, but celebrate together every day, often until the morning hours.

At the end of the North Sea Week, the long-distance races Pantaenius Rund Skagen over 510 nautical miles with the destination Kiel lighthouse and, since 1968, the Helgoland-Edinburgh regatta over 400 nautical miles with the destination Firth of Forth off the Scottish capital Edinburgh take place alternately . In 1973 and 1975, Rund Skagen was particularly stormy.
