Ghulam Ishaq Khan ( Urdu غلام اسحاق خان; * January 20, 1915 in Bannu , Northwest Province; † October 27, 2006 in Peshawar ) was a Pakistani politician and President of Pakistan from August 17, 1988 to July 18, 1993 .

Before Ghulam Ishaq Khan became President of Pakistan, he worked on various irrigation projects in West Pakistan and later moved to the Ministry of Finance to eventually become Minister of Finance.

In 1985, shortly after he was elected Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan , he won a Senate seat. Immediately after the death of Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq in 1988, Khan became executive president in accordance with constitutional rules of the order and was formally elected to the position. He held the position of President until 1993.
