Wasim Sajjad

Wasim Sajjad ( Urdu وسیم سجاد; Born March 30, 1941 in Jalandhar , British India ) is a Pakistani politician .

Wasim Sajjad is the son of the politician Sajjad Ahmad. He himself graduated from the University of the Punjab with honors in English in 1961 . In 1964 he was also able to win several awards in his other major, Political Science . In addition to his academic achievements, he also made a name for himself as an athlete during his student days.

Because of his performance as a student, he was selected for the Rhodes Scholarship . So he could law at Wadham College of Oxford University study. He completed this degree in 1967 as a Bachelor of Civil Law . In addition to his studies, he was also President of the University Oxford Islamic Society in 1966 and of the Oxford University Society Pakistan from 1965 to 1966 .

Profession and Politics

Wasim Sajjad is the only practicing attorney in Pakistan with a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from Oxford University. In addition to lecture series at universities, he led a delegation for the Pakistani state at the Interparliamentary Conference in Sofia .

As a politician, he first became a member of the Senate in 1985. There he took over the office of Minister for Justice and Parliamentary Affairs from September 1986 to December 1988. On December 24, 1988, he became Chairman of the Senate. In 1991 he was confirmed in this office for three years. Wasim Sajjad took over the affairs of state as deputy of the incumbent president in his absence.

He served as transitional president for the first time from July to November 1993. This became necessary because the National Assembly was dissolved due to the confrontation between Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Nawaz Sharif . In December 1997 he succeeded Faruk Ahmad Khan Leghari as transitional president after a constitutional crisis . He held this office until January 1998.

From 1998 to 1999 he was President of the Senate. In this function he visited the Federal Republic of Germany in 1999 and took part in a Federal Council meeting as a guest of honor together with his wife. During this visit Wasim Sajjad also made stops in Thuringia , Lower Saxony , Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia .

In 2006, as President of the Senate, he introduced a resolution in the Pakistani House of Lords that sharply criticized the Mohammed cartoons . These cartoons would have hurt the feelings of Muslims around the world. The resolution, unanimously adopted by Parliament, read “ The Senate strongly condemns the deliberate and concerted action of the European media in general, and the Danish newspaper (which printed the cartoons first) in particular. »

As a politician, he visited Germany, the USA , Great Britain , Canada , France , China , Saudi Arabia , Poland , Japan , Malaysia , the Philippines and Thailand . He is considered tolerant and speaks out in favor of democracy in his country. He has also developed a reputation as a mediator and also stands for dialogue with the opposition.

Awards

Wadham College, Oxford elected Wasim Sajjad an honorary member in 1992 for his contributions to education and politics. This honor is an old tradition with which the institute shows its pride in a former member.
