The following list gives an overview of the heads of state of Pakistan . From independence in 1947 to the entry into force of the republican constitution in 1956, Pakistan was a constitutional monarchy with the status of an independent Dominion . The formal head of state was the British monarch, who was represented by the governor general. Since 1956 the president, who is elected by an electoral body according to the constitution, has headed the state, which until 1971 also included East Pakistan . Several presidents of Pakistan, however, came to office through military coups and ruled dictatorially.
