In the course of the August coup in Moscow in 1991, there were also mass demonstrations in the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic and the President of the Tajik SSR, Kachar Makhkamov, was finally ousted . Rahmon Nabiev won the subsequent elections on November 24, 1991 and became chairman of the still existing Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan.

After internal disputes in the Communist Party , Parliament elected Emomali Rahmonov to head the Supreme Soviet on November 19, 1992 . On November 6, 1994 and in 1999, 2006 and 2013 he was elected President of Tajikistan by the people. In 2007 he changed his name to Emomalij Rahmon.
