List of heads of state of Azerbaijan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Azerbaijan declared its independence from the Soviet Union on September 23, 1989. Ayaz Mütəllibov was elected the first president of Azerbaijan in September 1991, but had to resign in 1992 as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict . His successor Əbülfəz Elçibəy , who had to resign after only one year in the office of president after protests by the army, also failed because of the same problem. After two terms in office of President Heydər Əliyev , his son İlham Əliyev came to power in 2003. He continued his father's way of governing. Particularly noteworthy is the tough crackdown on the opposition and the introduction of a new constitution that allows him more than two terms in office. In 2008 this decision was also supported by Parliament.
