President of Vietnam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam ( Vietnamese : Chủ tịch nước Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam ) is the head of state of Vietnam . He is also chairman of the defense and security council and thus commander in chief of the Vietnamese People's Army . The President is elected from among the ranks of the National Assembly for a term of five years.

There is no legal requirement that the president be a member of the Communist Party; however, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee is usually elected to this office.

Its functions are to a large extent representative in nature. The most powerful man in the state, on the other hand, is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam , followed by the Prime Minister.

The official seat of the President is the Presidential Palace in Hanoi.

The presidency was introduced when the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was founded in 1976. From July 4, 1981 to September 22, 1992 the office was chairman of the State Council .

Until 1976 Vietnam was divided into north and south. Both parts therefore had their own head of state.
