Nguyễn Khanh

Nguyễn Khánh (born November 8, 1927 in the Trà Vinh Province, † January 11, 2013 in San José (California) ) was a South Vietnamese general and politician.

In 1963 Nguyễn Khánh became a member of the military junta which overthrew President Ngô Đình Diệm . On August 16, 1964, he led a bloodless coup against Dương Văn Minh , which he assumed neutralist tendencies. Although Nguyễn Khánh had Phan Khắc Sửu elected president by the Vietnamese Revolutionary Council on September 26, 1964 , he remained in actual power as commander in chief of the armed forces . In February 1965 he was ousted by Nguyễn Văn Thiệu and Nguyễn Cao Kỳ in a military coup . Nguyễn Khánh then went to France as ambassador and moved to the USA in 1977.

On January 1, 2005, Nguyễn Khánh was elected head of state of the so-called Free Vietnam Government , an anti-communist organization in Little Saigon, Westminster, California, USA.
