Lê Đức Anh (born December 1, 1920 in Truong Ha, Phu Vang District, Thừa Thiên-Huế Province; † April 22, 2019 in Hanoi ) was a Vietnamese general and politician .

Life

Lê Đức Anh was born near Huế in 1920 . He was employed as a worker and joined the Communist Party of Indochina in 1938 . After his participation as a member of the Việt Minh in the August Revolution led by Ho Chi Minh in 1945, which led to the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945, he began his military service in the North Vietnamese People's Army, the forerunner of the Vietnamese People's Army (Quân Đội Nhân Dân Việt Nam) . First he was a political officer in a battalion and then in the  301 regiment. From October 1948 to 1950 he was then a political officer in the military region No. 7 (Đông Nam Bộ) based in Saigon . In this capacity he also took part in the Indochina War between 1951 and 1954 .

After the Indochina Conference in Geneva in 1954 , he became an officer in the General Staff of the People's Army and was promoted to colonel (Đại tá) there in 1958 . From 1964 to 1968 he was head of the personnel department of the units of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (Việt Cộng) .

In 1969 he became commander of the military region No. 9 in the Mekong Delta (Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long). After his promotion to lieutenant general (Trung Tuong) he took during the Vietnam War at the Ho Chi Minh campaign against South Vietnam from December 1974 to April 1975 as commander of the units in West Vietnam (Huong Tay Nam) part. In May 1976 he was again commander of Military Region No. 9, before he was from June 1978 to 1981 Commander and Political Commissar of Military Region No. 7 in Ho Chi Minh City . As such, he was promoted to Colonel General (Thượng tướng) in 1980 .

From 1976 to 1997 Lê Đức Anh was also a member of the National Assembly (Quốc hội Việt Nam).

In 1981 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense and Head of the Political Department in the Ministry of Defense (Bộ Quốc phòng). In the same year he became commander of the Vietnamese army during the occupation of Cambodia and was promoted to army general there in 1984 .

From 1982 to 2001 he was also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam (Bộ Chính trị Ban Chấp hành Trung ương Đảng Cộng sản Việt Nam).

After his return he was the successor of General Lê Trọng Tấn, who died in office, from December 1986 to February 1987 as Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnamese People's Army (Tổng Tham mưu trưởng Quân đội Nhân dân Việt Nam). He then succeeded General Văn Tiến Dũng as Defense Minister and held this post until he was replaced by General Đoàn Khuê in 1991.

On September 23, 1992, he succeeded Võ Chí Công as Chairman of the State Council and thus President of Vietnam . He held this mostly ceremonial office until he was replaced by Trần Đức Lương on September 24, 1997.

General Lê Đức Anh has received several awards for his services, including the Order of the Golden Star (Huân chương Sao vàng) and the Ho Chi Minh Order (Huân chương Hồ Chí Minh).

Lê Đức Anh died in April 2019 at the age of 98.
