Trần Đức Lương (born May 5, 1937 ) was the President of Vietnam from 1997 to 2006 .

He was born in Quảng Ngãi Province and moved to Hanoi in 1955 after finishing school . There he studied geology and worked as a cartographer . He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1959 and became a party official in the 1970s. In 1987 he became Deputy Prime Minister. He had been a member of the Politburo since 1996, and in 1997 he was elected President of the country. He held this office until June 27, 2006, when he was replaced by Nguyễn Minh Triết .
