Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry ( Urdu فضل الہی چوہدری; * January 1, 1904 in the Province of Gujarat , British India ; † June 2, 1982 in Lahore , Pakistan ) was a Pakistani politician and President of Pakistan from 1973 to 1978.

Life

Fazal studied politics at Aligarh Muslim University and law at the University of the Punjab . After graduating in 1927, he went back to Gujarat, where he practiced as a lawyer and worked as a local politician. In 1942 he joined the Muslim League . In 1945 he was elected chairman of the League for Gujarat. After independence, he was temporarily Minister of Education and Health. In 1956 he was elected to the National Assembly and was its spokesman until 1958. Under the government of Muhammed Ayub Khan , he joined the Convention Muslim League . After the 1962 elections, he became deputy opposition leader. In 1970 he was for the Pakistani People's Party elected to parliament and became speaker of parliament in 1972.

After the 1973 constitution was passed, he was elected President for a five-year term. Its tasks were mostly representative, the actual power rested with the former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto , who took over the office of Prime Minister. Fazal's position remained unaffected after the military coup in 1977, and only after his term in office was he replaced by Zia ul-Haq in September 1978 .
