Between October 7, 1958 and August 14, 1973 there was no Prime Minister due to martial law , except for a few days in December 1971. Amin resigned from the post of military administrator in 1971 due to the loss of East Pakistan in the Bangladesh war , while President Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan resigned. East Pakistan gained independence from Pakistan on December 17, 1971 as Bangladesh . Zulfikar Ali Bhutto became president and military administrator on December 20, 1971, and in 1973 he assumed the office of prime minister. | ||||||

On October 12, 1999, General Pervez Musharraf overthrew the incumbent Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the wake of the Kargil War . Musharraf took over the office of head of government, but only carried the title of "chief executive", on June 20, 2001, appointed himself president . After the elections on October 10, 2002, the office of Prime Minister was reinstated. | ||||||
