Chaudhry Muhammad Ali ( Urdu چوہدری محمد علی; * July 15, 1905 in Jalandhar ; † December 2, 1980 ) was a Pakistani statesman and Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1955 to 1956 .

Career

He studied at the University of the Punjab in Lahore . Thereafter, C. Muhammad Ali served as Minister of Finance of India and was one of the highest-ranking Muslim officials in British India . After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Ali became the general secretary of the new state. In 1951 he was promoted to finance minister.

Four years later, in 1955, he was appointed Prime Minister by Iskander Mirza , then Governor General. Ali took over from Muhammad Ali Bogra , whom he had previously replaced as chairman of the Muslim League . In October 1955 he merged the western parts of Pakistan to form the new province of West Pakistan . His greatest success as Prime Minister was the introduction of a new constitution for Pakistan (March 1956) that made the country a republic.

C. Muhammad Ali resigned from his government and Muslim League positions in September 1956 after falling out with the League over the split from the Republican Party .
