Muhammad Khan Junejo

Muhammad Khan Junejo ( Urdu محمد خان جونیجو, Sindhi محمد خان جوڻيجو; * August 18, 1932 ; † March 16, 1993 ) was a Pakistani politician and Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1985 to 1988.

Life

Junejo was born in Sindhri in the Tharparkar / Sindh district. He earned a degree in Agriculture in the UK. 1962 was elected to the West Pakistani provincial parliament and from 1963 held several ministerial posts in the provincial government there.

Following the partial restoration of the constitution, suspended since the 1977 military coup and the 1985 elections, Junejo was appointed Prime Minister of Pakistan by Mohammed Zia ul-Haq . In November 1985 the 8th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, introducing a semi-presidential system of government. In return, the state of emergency was lifted and some basic rights restored. Junejo campaigned, among other things, for the signing of the Geneva Agreement (April 1988) to end the war in Afghanistan . In May 1988 he was dismissed by Zia, citing his special powers under the 8th Amendment to the Constitution, while the provincial governments and parliaments were dissolved. Zia's dictatorship ended a few months later when he died in a plane crash.

In 1990 Junejo was elected to the National Assembly. He died in 1993 after a serious illness.
