Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (born September 8, 1892 in Medinipur , † December 5, 1963 in Dhaka ) was a Bengali politician and lawyer, and from September 12, 1956 to October 17, 1957, the fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan .

Life

Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was born into a Muslim Bengali family known for their wealth and gentry . His family claimed to be direct descendants of the first caliph. His father, Sir Zahid Suhrawardy, worked on the Calcutta High Court . His mother was the daughter of a writer. His brother was appointed diplomat in the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Suhrawarrdy graduated from Calcutta University with a degree in mathematics in 1911. He received his masters degree in political science from Oxford University in 1920. His background as a gentry helped him settle in England. Surdhwary worked at Gray's Inn after graduating in 1922 and was trained as a lawyer. After training in England, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy returned to India and worked at the Calcutta High Court in 1922. He built up a reputation as a competent lawyer. He joined the Muslim League and was elected to the Parliament of Bengal. His practice as a lawyer was particularly in the Khilafat movement. He remained associated with the movement for many years. Suhrawardy was elected deputy mayor of the Calcutta Corporation in 1924 and joined the Swaraj Party. However, he left the party after unrest between Muslims and Hindus in Calcutta. He represented the Muslims as a lawyer in court. Suhrwardy strengthened the Muslim League's political program in the 1930s. He supported the idea of ​​a separate state for Muslims and mobilized the Pakistan Movement. He became the general secretary of the Bengali Muslim League in 1936. His outspoken support for the Pakistan Movement reinforced the political program and position of the Muslim League. He was Minister of Labor in the government of Abul Kasim Fazlul Haq from 1937 to 1943 . He was appointed Minister of Civil Services by Prime Minister Khawaja Nazimuddin in 1943. During his time there was a famine in Bengal in 1943 .
