Makhdoom Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani ( Urdu مخدوم سيد يوسف رضا گیلانى, also Jussuf Raza Gilani ; * June 9, 1952 in Karachi ) was the 26th Prime Minister of Pakistan in a coalition government made up of the Pakistani People's Party , Pakistan's Muslim League , Awami National Party , the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Balochist National Party .

He was removed from office in 2012.

Life

Ascent

Gilani comes from a politically and religiously prominent family of Iranian descent in Multan , Punjab . His father Syed Musa Pak was a well-known dervish among the Qadiri - Sufis whose founder, the mystic Abdul-Qadir Gilani , came from the Iranian province of Gilan . After graduating from the University of the Punjab with an MA in Journalism in 1976, he began his political activities in the Muslim League . He was Minister in the government of Muhammad Khan Junejo from 1985 to 1986 during the military coup and martial law- based presidency of Mohammed Zia ul-Haq .

In 1988 he moved to the PPP under Benazir Bhutto , of which he has been a member since then. For this he was repeatedly elected to the National Assembly since 1989 and was Minister from 1989 to 1990 and Speaker of Parliament from 1993 to 1997.

During the reign of Pervez Musharraf , Gilani spent February 2001 to October 2006 in prison after being convicted of patronage while serving as Speaker of Parliament.

After the success of the opposition parties in the election to the National Assembly in February 2008, he was elected Prime Minister on March 24, 2008 with 264 of 328 members of the Lower House. President Musharraf swore him in on March 25, 2008.

An unsuccessful assassination attempt was carried out on Gilani in Rawalpindi on September 3, 2008 while his motorcade was on the way to his home. The Taliban confessed to the attack.

Conviction and impeachment

On February 13, 2012, the Pakistani Supreme Court charged him with disobeying justice. This was due to Gilani's refusal to reopen the corruption investigation against the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari . In April 2012, the court sentenced Gilani for disregard of justice. As a symbolic sentence, the judges imposed that he remained in the power of the judiciary as long as the trial lasted. The trial ended in less than a minute and Gilani had served his sentence. He was threatened with losing his office, as the Pakistani constitution does not allow convicts to hold public office. On June 19, the Supreme Court ordered Zardari to start new elections. As a justification he gave the "incapacity" of Gilani due to the criminal record. Gilani moved out of the prime minister's residence on the night of June 20, and Zardari called a parliamentary session on June 22 to determine Gilani's successor. On June 21, Makhdoom Shahabuddin was chosen as the successor candidate of the PPP, its coalition partners and Zardari. Immediately thereafter, however, the Pakistani judiciary issued an arrest warrant for Shahabuddin due to a 2011 drug scandal. As a result, the former energy and water minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was nominated as a substitute candidate and elected by parliament on June 22, 2012 as the new prime minister of Pakistan.
