Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi (born August 14, 1931 in British India , † November 20, 2009 in London ) was a Pakistani politician and 1990 interim Prime Minister of Pakistan .

Life

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi was born in Sindh . His ancestors were Murīds of the Pir's of Sarhandi. He had four brothers of whom he was the eldest. His grandfather, Khan Bahadur, was a member of the National Assembly of Bombay in 1923, 1927 and 1931 . The province of Sindh was then only represented by four members. Jatoi's father, Ghulam Rasool Jatoi, was a member of the Sindh provincial government in 1946 and 1952 . Jatoi spent his school career in Karachi . He went to England to study law. He was unable to continue his studies because of his father's serious illness and returned to Pakistan after only one year.

Jatoi was elected to the first provincial government of West Pakistan in 1956. In 1952 he was chairman of the Nawab Shah city council.

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi was one of the founders of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in 1967 with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto . He was Chief Minister of Sindh Province in Bhutto's government. The Pakistani Prime Minister, Zia ul Haq , had Jatoi arrested twice.

He was represented in the Sindh provincial government in 1973 and 1977. Jatoi held several ministerial posts in the government of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and was the Chief Minister of Sindh from 1973 . His tenure was the longest in Pakistan's history.

In 1979 Jatoi founded his own party, the National People's Party . Many high-ranking politicians were expected to join the party. In the parliamentary elections in 1988, however, he could not win a seat in parliament in his constituency. In the parliamentary elections in 1993, his party became a coalition partner of the PPP.

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi was elected to the Pakistani Parliament in 1962, 1965, 1970, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1997 .

Jatoi's National People's Party gained popularity. After the dissolution of the government of Benazir Bhutto, he served as interim Prime Minister of Pakistan for three months from August 6, 1990 to November 6, 1990 . Jatoi joined Bhutto in the opposition to Nawaz Sharif . This led to the dissolution of the government under Nawaz Sharif in 1993.

In the parliamentary elections in Pakistan in 2002, Jatoi was part of the National Alliance (NA). NA secured 16 seats in parliament and Sindh and three seats in the Senate .

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi died in London in November 2009 of a progressive illness.
