Shaukat Aziz (born March 6, 1949 in Karachi ), Urdu شوکت عزيز, is a former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Pakistan .

Life

Shaukat Aziz attended Saint Patrick's High School in Karachi and Abbottabad Public School in Abbottabad . He received a Bachelor of Science from Gordon College in Rawalpindi . In 1969 he received an MBA from the Pakistani Business School IBA ( Institute of Business Administration ), Karachi. His financial career began in 1969 with an internship at Citibank .

From 1975 he worked for Citibank in numerous countries, including Greece, the USA, Great Britain, Malaysia and Singapore. Among other things, he was head of the Corporate and Investment Banking department for the Asia-Pacific and Central and Eastern Europe / Middle East / Africa regions .

In November 1999 he was appointed finance minister of the new government by Pervez Musharraf .

After the resignation of Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali on June 6, 2004, he was nominated as his successor by his party, the PML (Q) . In July 2004, he survived a suicide attack while on a campaign trip to run for a seat in parliament. On August 27, 2004, he was elected Prime Minister by the National Assembly with 191 votes to 151 and took office on August 28. He retained his post as finance minister.

The economic reforms he initiated are blamed for Pakistan's sustained strong economic growth. Aziz's critics, on the other hand, accuse him of irregularities in a number of privatizations.

On November 15, 2007, Muhammad Mian Soomro succeeded him in the office of Prime Minister.
