The Awami League ( Awami League ; Bengali আওয়ামী লীগ Āoẏāmī Līg ; German  Volksbund ) is a party in former East Pakistan and today's Bangladesh .

Political ideology

The Awami League sees itself as a center-left party. It is still one of the largest political groups in Bangladesh today. It is officially social democratic and secular .

history

It was founded in 1949 by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and campaigned for the autonomy and independence of East Pakistan . In 1954, the Muslim League , which had ruled Pakistan until then, lost in the regional elections in East Pakistan against the opposition Awami League, which had stood in the "United Front" alliance with the Krishak Sramik party . In February 1966, Mujibur Rahman presented a six-point program that provided for a federation based on the Lahore resolution of 1940. The central government saw the program as a plan to partition Pakistan. Mujibur was arrested, charged, and acquitted in 1968; the indictment sparked violent unrest in East Pakistan in December 1968. Ultimately, there was a civil war in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), the Bangladesh War , which ended with the defeat of (West) Pakistan after the intervention of India in 1971. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the country's first prime minister from 1972 until his overthrow in 1975. At the end of time (1975) the Awami League became a unitary party and the regime took on dictatorial lines.

From 1996 to 2001 Hasina Wajed , a daughter of Mujibur Rahman, was Prime Minister of Bangladesh. There were repeated attacks on leading Awami members from 2004 to 2006; the police also occasionally beat them until they were hospitalized.

After several years of boycott, the party returned to parliament in 2006. This was mainly due to a clause in the constitution that states that a minimum attendance in parliament is necessary in order to reap the benefits that parliamentarians are entitled to.

The 2008 and 2014 elections in Bangladesh were won by the Awami League. Hasina Wajed became Prime Minister again.
