Sheikh Hasina Wajed (also Wazed , Bengali হাসিনা ওয়াজেদ Hāsinā Oẏājed ; born September 28, 1947 in the village of Tungipara, Gopalganj district ) is a leading politician in Bangladesh . She has been Prime Minister of the country for the second time since January 6, 2009.

Life

Hasina is the eldest daughter of the state's founder, Mujibur Rahman , who had a significant influence on Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. She graduated from Dhaka University in the late 60's. During this time she was politically active and worked as the political right hand of her father, who had been imprisoned by the Pakistani government.

In 1968 she married the Bangladeshi scientist Wazed Miah.

Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, were not murdered in a military coup against their father on August 15, 1975, as were the other members of their family, as they were in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time. Sheikh Hasina spent six years in exile and in 1981 took over the leadership of the then opposition socialist Awami League . She has become a prominent advocate of democracy, for which she has been placed under house arrest several times.

From June 23, 1996 to July 15, 2001 she had her first term as Prime Minister of Bangladesh . Her longstanding political opponent is Khaleda Zia . Both women have held the office of Prime Minister alternately.

In the 2008 parliamentary elections , Wajed and her center-left party won a clear victory against Zia and their Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and secured more than three quarters of the 300 seats for the league. She has already escaped several assassinations that were carried out on her. On January 6, 2009 she was sworn in again as Prime Minister. One of their political programs is 'Digital Bangladesh'.

She was confirmed in office in the controversial parliamentary elections in 2014 . Before and during the election there were violent clashes in which several people were killed. The BNP had called for an election boycott because they accused the government of election manipulation . The USA , as well as the Commonwealth and the EU, refused to send election observers .

When the LGBT activist Xulhaz Mannan was murdered in 2016 , she accused him of spreading pornography and spoke of "incidents after the publication of objectionable things".
