The Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( Bengali : বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল , Bāṃlādeś Jātīẏatābādī Dal , Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal ) is a party in Bangladesh .

The party is considered to be religiously conservative. The chairman is Khaleda Zia , the widow of the founder Ziaur Rahman .

Political ideology

The BNP sees itself as a center-right party. They combine conservatism , corporatism , militarism and anti-communism and are therefore considered a more right-wing party. The BNP also partly represents anti-Semitic positions. The party is preferred by the upper class and the military .

history

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party was founded on September 1, 1978 by then President Ziaur Rahman , who came to power in 1975 through a military coup. The BNP and its coalition partners ruled Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. Alongside the Awami League , the BNP is the country's second major leading party.

The 2001 parliamentary elections in Bangladesh resulted in an absolute majority for the BNP with 41% of the vote and 64% of the seats.

Before the planned 2006 election, the opposition parties accused the BNP of manipulating the election results. There were violent clashes, the election did not take place.

In the 2008 election , the BNP only received 33% of the vote and 10% of the seats. The 2014 election was boycotted by her.
