Gopalganj (District, Bangladesh)

Gopalganj ( Bengali : গোপালগঞ্জ জেলা , Gopālagañj jelā ) is an administrative district in the central south of Bangladesh . The district lies within the superordinate administrative unit Dhaka .

The 1489.92 km² district borders on the Faridpur district in the north, the Madaripur and Barishal districts in the east, Pirojpur and Bagerhat in the south and the Narail district in the west . Over 1.1 million people live in the district.

The main rivers are the Garai , Madhumati , Kaliganga , Hunda , Ghagar , Kumar , Borni Baor , Chandar Beel and Baghyar Beel .

Gopalganj is divided into the five Upazilas Gopalganj Sadar, Kashiani, Kotalipara, Muksudpur and Tungipara. Within this administrative division there are 68 Union Parishads (village councils), 880 villages and four cities.

The district, which was only created in 1984, was formerly part of the Faridpur district.

Over 40,000 people live in the district capital of Gopalganj .
