Gaibandha ( Bengali : গাইবান্ধা) is a district in Rangpur . In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Gaibandha . The total area of ​​the district is 2179 km². The district consists of 7 Upazilas . The Gaibandha subdivision was founded in 1875. Gaibandha was formerly known as Bhabanigonj. The name was changed from Bhabanigonj to Gaibandha in 1875. Gaibandha was founded as a district on February 15, 1984.

The Gaibandha district borders on Kurigram and Rangpur in the north, the Bogra district in the south, the Joypurhat , Dinajpur and Jamalpur districts in the west and the Brahmaputra river in the east . The district has 2,430,627 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 42.8% of the population. 92.7% of the population are Muslims , 7.1% are Hindus and 0.2% are Christians , Buddhists or others.

The climate is tropical and warm all year round. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 32.3 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 11.2 degrees. The annual rainfall is 2931 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . There is a sugar mill, a cotton mill, 35 biscuit factories, 28 ice cream factories, and a cane factory in the district. According to the 2011 census, 70.7% of the workforce work in agriculture, 24.1% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 5.2% in industry .
