The Barishal Division ( Bengali : বরিশাল বিভাগ , Bariśāl bibhāg ), also Barisal , is one of eight administrative units in Bangladesh , which are superordinate to the districts and named after their respective largest city. The area covers 13,295.55 km². Barishal is located in the central south of the country. The division has a population of around 9 million. The administrative capital is the city of the same name, Barishal .
The Barishal division borders on the neighboring Dhaka administrative unit to the north, Chittagong to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south and Khulna to the west .
The (fifth) division created on January 1, 1993 is made up of six districts: Barguna , Barishal , Bhola , Jhalakati , Patuakhali and Pirojpur . It has 12 municipalities and numerous local sub-government categories.
