Khulna ( Bengali : খুলনা জেলা ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh , which is part of the Khulna Division , the superordinate administrative unit. In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Khulna . The total area of ​​the district is 4389 km², making the district one of the largest in the country. The district consists of 9 Upazilas and 5 Thanas (cities).

It is bordered to the north by the Jessore district , to the northeast by the Narail district , to the east by the Bagerhat district , to the south by the Bay of Bengal and to the west by the Satkhira district . The district has 2.3 million inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 60.1% of the population. 76.6% of the population are Muslim , 22.7% are Hindus and 0.6% are Buddhists.

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture and the textile industry. The city of Khulna is an important center for industry and trade for the country. According to the 2011 census, 39.7% of the workforce work in agriculture, 45.9% in the service sector (mostly in informal conditions) and 14.4% in the industry . Jute , rice , sesame , betel nuts , vegetables and fruits are grown .
