Lalmonirhat (District)

Lalmonirhat ( Bengali : লালমনিরহাট) is a district in Rangpur . In the capital of the district forms the city of the same name Lalmonirhat . The total area of ​​the district is 1247.37 km². The district is composed of 5 Upazilas . Lalmonirhat has been a separate district since 1984. It is said that the district name Lalmonirhat derives from the name Lalmoni, a wealthy lady who is said to have donated a large piece of land for the construction of the Lalmonirhat Railway Station.

Lalmonirhat is north of Koch Bihar and Jalpaiguri ( West Bengal ), south of Ranpur , east of Kurigram and Koch Bihar and west of Rangpur and Nilphamari . The district's international border with India is 281.6 km long. The district has 1,256,099 inhabitants (2011 census). The literacy rate is 46.1% of the population. 86.0% of the population are Muslims , 13.9% are Hindus and 0.1% are Christians , Buddhists or others.

The climate is tropical and warm all year round. The annual average temperature of this district varies from a maximum of 32.3 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 11.2 degrees. The annual rainfall is 2931 mm (2011) and the humidity is high all year round.

The economy of the district is dominated by agriculture . Rice, jute, wheat, potatoes, tobacco, cotton and ginger are mainly grown. According to the 2011 census, 72.9% of the workforce work in agriculture, 22.5% in the service sector (mostly informal) and 4.6% in industry .
