The Dhaka division ( Bengali : ঢাকা বিভাগ , Ḍhākā bibhāg ) is one of eight administrative units in Bangladesh , which are superordinate to the districts and are named after their largest city.

Structure of the Dhaka division (as of 2015)

The Dhaka division borders the Sylhet and Chittagong administrative units to the east, Barishal to the south and Rajshahi and Khulna to the west . To the north, Dhaka borders the Maimansingh division , which was split off from Dhaka in 2015. The administrative unit covers an area of ​​20,593.74 km². The population is growing rapidly, in 2011 there were around 36 million inhabitants (not including the inhabitants of the districts that split off in 2015). In 2016 it was estimated at over 40 million.

The administrative unit consists of the capital city administration, that of Dhaka , 13 districts, several sub-districts and numerous local sub-administrative categories.

The 13 districts of the Dhaka division since the split of Maimansingh are Dhaka , Gazipur , Narsingdi , Manikganj , Munsiganj , Narayanganj , Faridpur , Madaripur , Shariatpur , Rajbari and Gopalganj .
