Bhola (district)

Bhola ( Bengali : ভোলা জেলা , Bholā jelā ) is an administrative district in southern Bangladesh, which is part of the Barishal Division , the superordinate administrative unit. The district has 1,776,795 inhabitants (2011 census).

The 3403.48 km² district, which is made up of islands, borders in the north on the neighboring districts of Barishal and Lakshmipur , in the east again on Lakshmipur, but also on the Noakhali district . In addition, the Meghna River forms the natural boundary on the eastern flank . To the south lies the Bay of Bengal and to the west the Tentulia River . Bhola also shares a common border with the Patuakhali district in the west .

Bhola is divided into five sub-districts, the so-called Upazilas : Bhola Sadar, Daulatkhan, Burdanuddin, Tazumuddin, Manpura, Lalmohan and Charfasson. Within these sub-government structures there are 60 Union Parishads (village councils), 460 villages and four five city councils.

The eponymous district capital is Bhola , which has almost 40,000 inhabitants .
