Dhaka ( Bengali : ঢাকা ) is an administrative district in central Bangladesh , which is within the Dhaka Division , the superordinate administrative unit. The capital in the northern part of the district is also called Dhaka and is the capital of all of Bangladesh.

While Dhaka (city corporation) only takes up about a fifth of the area of ​​the Dhaka district, it is the economic, political and cultural center of the district and the country as a whole. The Dhaka district consists of the city of Dhaka and the Upazila Keraniganj, Nababganj, Dohar, Savar and Dhamrai.

The 1463.6 km² district borders Gazipur and Tangail in the north, Munshiganj and Rajbari in the south, Narayanganj in the east and Manikganj in the west . Rivers that flow through this district are Padma , Kaliganga , Dhaleshwari , Ichamati, Shitalakshya , Buriganga and numerous smaller rivers.

According to the 2011 census, around 12 million people live in the district. The district forms a large part of the metropolitan area of ​​Dhaka and is one of the most densely populated regions in the world with a population density of over 8,000 people per square kilometer.

Dhaka District is an administrative entity and is not equal to Greater Dhaka metropolitan area which has become neighboring districts, nor is it entirely urban as there are rural areas within the district.

history

The administrative district of Dhaka was established in 1772. However, the existence of urbanized settlements in what is now Dhaka city dates back to the 7th century . Dhaka's development into an economic center and significant population growth was seen when the city came under the rule of the Mughal Empire in 1608 and was made the capital of Bengal . During the Mughal rule, the areas that are now in the Dhaka district were famous for their textile production.

In 1971 Dhaka became the capital of the new state of Bangladesh, which had split off from Pakistan . The urban region around Dhaka has since experienced rapid growth and urbanization. From 1991 to 2011 the population doubled from 5.8 million to 12 million.

economy

The district is the most important economic center in Bangladesh. The city has a large proportion of the nation's middle class and is a market for modern consumer and luxury goods. The city has historically attracted large numbers of migrant workers. Half of the workforce is employed in the household and in unorganized employment. The textile industry and outsourcing play an important role . Outside the urban regions, agriculture plays a dominant role.
